City lands grant for dam repairs

Amount covers 50% of costs

By Bert Lehman

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources awarded the city of Clintonville a $218,182 grant to go toward the costs to repair the Pigeon River dam.

The Clintonville Finance Committee discussed the dam repair project at its July 9 meeting.

Clintonville City Administrator Sharon Eveland asked the committee to recommend to the Clintonville City Council the awarding of the Pigeon River Dam repair project to Michels Corporation with the cost not to exceed $442,000. This dollar figure includes a contingency fee.

Eveland told the committee that the city had budgeted $220,000 for the dam repair project, as it anticipated receiving a DNR grant that would cover roughly half of the repairs costs.

The city ultimately was awarded a grant from the DNR through the 2018-19 Municipal Dam Grant Program. This leaves the city to cover $223,817 of the dam repair costs.

Eveland recommended that amount above the $220,000 budgeted would come from the Capital Fund balance.

The Finance Committee approved that recommendation to the council, which met the following night.

During the discussion at the council meeting, Clintonville Mayor Richard Beggs asked for clarification as to whether the city has received permission to draw down Pigeon Pond in order to make the dam repairs.

Eveland informed the council that the city submitted a drawdown application to the DNR on Monday, July 9.

The council approved the recommendation of the Finance Committee with the addition that it is contingent upon the city receiving approval to conduct a drawdown.

Alderman Brad Rokus was excused from the meeting.
