Polebitski scores twice in 3-2 win

A long road trip turned out to be a good thing for the Waupaca boys’ soccer team.

The Comets handed Medford a 3-2 defeat Aug. 21 in Stetsonville behind two goals from Keenin Polebitski in the season opener for both teams.

Waupaca built a 3-0 halftime lead on Polebitski’s goals and one from Forrest Ziebell.

Medford made it interesting in the second half with goals from Junus Telli and Oscar Mejia-Isaias.

Polebitski had an assist to go with his two goals and goalkeeper Bailey Colden finished with 17 saves.

“I was very pleased with how we responded against a very physical Medford team,” coach Cory Nagel said. “We talk about being physical on a daily basis and we wouldn’t have won today without that mindset. We have a lot of things to clean up, but for a first game, we did quite a bit well today and are starting our season off on the right foot.”

The Comets will compete in the Oshkosh Invitational Saturday, Aug. 25, at Winnebago County Park in Oshkosh before opening North Eastern Conference play at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at Fox Valley Lutheran in Appleton.

The team’s home opener at Comet Field against Luxemburg-Casco is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11.
