Motorists urged to be cautious

By Holly Neumann

With the school year quickly approaching drivers are reminded to be aware of area school busses that will be back on the road.

Gary Trzebiatowski, transportation supervisor for the Iola-Scandinavia School District, pointed out that peak times of travel within the district are from 6:30 a.m. TO 8:15 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.

“Maintaining awareness behind the wheel of a moving vehicle is a necessity with students waiting on the side of the road and walking to school,” he said.

When yellow lights are flashing on a school bus, be prepared as the bus is going to make a stop. When the red lights are flashing and the stop sign is out all surrounding traffic must stop.

Traveling at the posted speed limits at both the elementary school and high school during school hours, is just as important as maintaining a clear path for the busses to park in the morning and afternoon.

“The yellow line on the sidewalk serves a purpose for bus traffic,” Trzebiatowski said.

Bus route letters have arrived to the families this week.

At the beginning of the school year, students are advised to arrive at their bus stop 10 minutes ahead of schedule, until bus routes are firmly established.

Families who are new to the district or have relocated can contact Laura Meagher at the elementary school at 715-445-2411, ext. 1202; Wendy Williams at the high school at 715-445-2411, ext. 1302; or Trzebiatowski at the bus garage 715-445-2411, ext.1445 to make arrangements.

Students are reminded not to run to their bus until after the driver motions for them to cross the street. They are further reminded to be ready when the bus arrives and to be safe and polite to other students who are also waiting for the bus.

Once on the bus, students are expected to behave in the same manner as they would in the classroom.

The district is still in search of bus drivers. For more information contact Trzebiatowski 715-445-2411, ext.1445.
