Menzies scores three TDs

By Greg Seubert

Lose a game, then win a game.

That’s been the story of the season so far for the Waupaca football team.

The Comets improved to 2-2 on the season and in Bay Conference play Sept. 7 with a 49-0 win over Green Bay West on the Wildcats’ home field.

Jack Menzies scored three touchdowns that helped give the Comets a 28-0 halftime lead.

He capped Waupaca’s first drive with a 2-yard run and added a 77-yard punt return in the first quarter and hooked up with quarterback Davis Levine for a 55-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter before adding the two-point conversion.

Terry Schmidt’s 23-yard run with 1:34 remaining in the first half capped a five-play, 85-yard drive.

Levine and Schmidt scored from 10 yards out in the third quarter and Cody Rasmussen wrapped up the scoring with a 13-yard run in the final period.

Waupaca held the Wildcats to 16 rushing yards, while Schmidt ran for 106 of the Comets’ 188 yards on the ground on 12 carries.

Levine also completed nine of 12 passes for 169 yards, all in the first half.

Waupaca will take a break from its Bay Conference schedule, as the Comets held to Freedom Friday, Sept. 14, to face the Irish. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
