Speaker promotes diversity, community engagement

Barrett

Dr. Kimberly Barrett will present “Racial Identity in the Age of Obama and Markle” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, at the Waupaca Area Public Library.

The 2000 U.S. Census questionnaire was the first to allow respondents to select more than one race. Nationwide, approximately 2.4 percent of the population, over 6.8 million Americans, marked an identification with two or more races.

In the 2010 U.S. Census, approximately 9 million individuals, or 2.9 percent of the population, self-identified as multiracial.

Barrett will address the implications of this growing number of people who identify as multiracial or multiethnic relative to how Americans think about race.

She will examine demographic trends, critical race theory and her own life experience as the mother of a biracial, multiethnic child.

Barrett is vice president for diversity and inclusion and associate dean of the faculty at Lawrence University.

She joined the Lawrence community in 2016, after serving four years as vice president for multicultural affairs and community engagement at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.

There she practiced a hands-on role in continuing to promote diversity, multiculturalism, inclusion and community engagement.

She was recognized with the Diversity First Award from the National Diversity Council in Ohio, and since 1992, Barrett has served as a diversity consultant.

A native of Fort Jackson, South Carolina, Barrett earned a bachelor’s degree from Pfeiffer College in North Carolina, a master’s degree in clinical psychology from Murray State University and her doctorate in higher education administration from Southern Illinois University – Carbondale.

Sponsored by Winchester Academy, the program is free and open to the public.

Winchester Academy is funded through sponsors and tax-deductible donations.

Barrett’s program is sponsored by Susan Martin.
