Winchester speakers discuss Wisconsin Idea

Felix Navarro and Justin Isherwood will present “Agriculture in Central Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Idea” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at the Waupaca Area Public Library.

Sponsored by Winchester Academy, the program is free and open to the public.

Navarro and Isherwood will discuss agriculture in Wisconsin, from the Civil War to the present. They will focus on technological developments such as railroads, tractors, and telecommunication.

Isherwood is a fifth-generation farmer and award-winning author. He will present his observations on farms, large and small, and how the agriculture responded to challenges as Central Wisconsin went from zero industrial food processing to become essential to national food security.

Navarro is station research lead at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Hancock Agricultural Research Station, a prominent vegetable research facility in the Central Sands of Wisconsin.

In 2015-16, he worked with Isherwood on a book titled “HARS: Celebrating 100 years of the Wisconsin Idea.”

The Wisconsin Idea is a philosophy embraced by the University of Wisconsin System that holds that research should be applied to solve problems and improve health, quality of life, the environment, and agriculture for all citizens of the state.

Winchester Academy is funded through sponsors and tax-deductible donations.

The Oct. 8 program is sponsored by Anita and Bob Olson.
