Benefit for Manawa EMTs

Chili dump, spaghetti dinner at city hall

By Holly Neumann

The Manawa Rural Ambulance Service is always ready to help people in their time of need.

Now they are reaching out to the community for help for some of its own.

A chili dump, spaghetti dinner and bake sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at Manawa City Hall, 500 S. Bridge St., Manawa.

Funds raised will be used to help three department members with medical expenses from prolonged medical issues.

“These people have put so much of their time into helping others, by being there in their time of need,” said Tammy Arndt, who is helping organize the event. “I’d like to think the community would like to give back to those that are on call for them.”

The goal is to raise $10,000.

“We do our job because we want to help the community,” said Arndt. “We don’t receive benefits, or paid vacation or 401(k)s. Most of us have full-time jobs and do this on the side. Please understand these are the facts of the matter. We do what we do because we love helping all of you.”

The cost of the spaghetti is $8 per adult, $5 for children ages 2-12 and no charge for children under age 2.

The cost of the chili is $5 a bowl, or $18 a quart.

The department is currently short staffed.

“With these three off work and already being short on staff, it puts more strain on the rest of us to pick up shifts to keep our community covered,” she said. “We could use more EMTs on the service. If anyone is interested, please see any of the workers at the benefit, and we would be happy to get you the information to apply.”
