Maggio completes project

I-S teen earns Eagle Scout award

By Holly Neumann

Luke Maggio, a senior at Iola-Scandinavia High School, recently completed his Eagle Scout projects at Jorgens Park and the boat landing in Scandinavia.

“For my project I removed the old dock at the public boat landing on Silver Lake in Scandinavia,” he said. “Then built a new one to replace it. I also put in another dock on the east end of Silver Lake for Jorgens Park.

Maggio obtained donations of three metal frames and a bench for the project.

“I built pallets with decking to sit in the frames because they were outdated and no one carried the decking material for them, so I improvised,” he said. “In the end, both docks turned out looking really nice.”

Maggio is a member of Troop 631 and has been involved in scouting for 11 years. It was important to him to earn his Eagle Scout recognition because his father had earned it when he was in scouting.

“I wanted to show him that I can get it too,” he said. “And, he has helped me throughout the whole process, from start to finish, every day that I worked on it.”

He admits that he learned a lot from doing the project.

“Being in charge of something so important isn’t as easy as it may seem,” Maggio said. “It is really hard to do and is really stressful.”

His hope is that when others look at the piers, they see how much time and effort he put into it and realize that a Boy Scout can do important things.

Upon his high school graduation in May 2019 Maggio plans to attend Fox Valley Technical College to pursue an associate’s degree as an automation engineer.

He is the son of Jason and Jill Maggio.
