Waupaca drops conference opener

Free throws were not a strong point for the Waupaca and Oconto Falls girls’ basketball teams in their North Eastern Conference opener.

The teams combined to miss 21 of 37 free throws Nov. 20. However, Oconto Falls made enough of them down the stretch on the Panthers’ home court in a 55-37 win over the Comets.

The Panthers used a 12-2 run to take a 28-16 lead in the first half and led 33-23 at halftime.

Baskets from Savannah Wehmeyer and Seattle Lettau helped Waupaca cut the lead to 35-29 early in the second half, but that was as close as the Comets would get the rest of the way.

Lettau and Emma Smidt led Waupaca with 12 points each, while Kari Albrecht and Natalie Brauer led the Panthers with 12.
