Waupaca wrestlers win titles

 

Manawa gets three thirds

Kaleb Mannel and Colby Bernhardt won championships for Waupaca’s wrestling team Dec. 1 at the John Roberts Scramble in Antigo.

The Comets also opened the season Nov. 29 with a 54-12 North Eastern Conference win over Clintonville/Marion.

Mannel placed first at 113 pounds with a 5-0 record while Bernhardt won all four of his matches at 132.

Antigo tied with Ashland for first place with 251.5 points, but Antigo ended up with the tournament championship on a tiebreaker. Other team scores were Lakeland/Mercer (204), Athens (167), Waupaca (158.5), Cameron (148), Rosholt (133.5), Menominee Indian (126), Three Lakes/Phelps (125.5), Manawa (106), Marathon (88), Crivitz (59) and Elcho (29).

Other wrestlers placing for Waupaca were Ben Habighorst (fourth, 126); Gabe Pierotti (fourth, 182); Devan Eisentraut (fifth, 138); John Schmidt (sixth, 120); Damian Pomerenke (sixth, 145); Ron Mason (sixth, 152); Jesse Frisk (eighth, 170); Kai Badgley (11th, 220); and Emmalee Schmid (12th, 160).

Manawa had three third-place finishers in Gavin Linjer (113), Bryan Griffin (145) and Eli Yoder (182). Also placing for the Wolves were Colin Moser (fourth, 170); Tyler Pynenberg (seventh, 138); Corey Beyer (seventh, 195); Andrew Elmhorst (seventh, 220); and Tanner Peters (eighth, 152).

The meet included five contested matches, two double forfeits and seven Clintonville/Marion forfeits.

Waupaca’s wins came from Habighorst’s 7-2 decision over Jetlyn Michonski at 126, Mason’s pin of Matthew Skowronski in 2:55 at 152 and Badgley’s 3-0 decision over Levi Engel at 285.

Clintonville/Marion’s points came on Michael Mochonski’s pin of Pomerenke in 3:34 at 145 and Tabitha Breitrick’s pin of Schmid in 46 seconds at 160.

The Truckers also forfeited matches to Mannel (113), Schmidt (120), Bernhardt (132), Eisentraut (138), Garret Miller (170), Kyle Hamm (182) and Pierotti (195).

The Comets will travel to Freedom Thursday, Dec. 6, for a 6:30 p.m. North Eastern Conference dual meet with the Irish before heading to Weyauwega Saturday, Dec. 8, for the Akey Duals. Teams from Weyauwega-Fremont, Stratford, North Fond du Lac, Ripon and Seymour will also compete at the meet, which gets underway at 9:30 a.m.
