Martin, Charles

Charles was born to Charles and Irene (Maunder) Martin, Sr. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 20, 1938. His parents divorced early on and with his father away serving in the US Navy, Charles and his brother, Jack, were moved to Durango, Colorado to live with their grandparents. After the war, they were reunited with their father who was now remarried to Philomena (Richards). They settled into the San Francisco Bay Area in California. It was there that Charles met and married Sharon (Danielson) Martin on December 16, 1961. Charles and Sharon have three children: Charles Oliver Martin, III, who lives in Appleton; Christopher Jacob and Ann (Wheelock) Martin, who live in Utah; and Collin David and Ana (Padron) Martin, who live in New York. Charles and Sharon have two granddaughters: Ella Ann Martin and Madeline Elizabeth Martin. Their third granddaughter is expected in March, 2019 to Collin and Ana.

In 1956, Charles graduated from Hayward High School where he competed in track and cross country. After school, he enlisted in the US Navy and was stationed in Camp Pendleton and was trained as a Corpsman. He was honorably discharged in 1960. After the Navy, Charles worked as an Operating Room technician in several hospitals in California. He later went on to work in sales in the Hospital Supply Industry and then as an independent Orthopedic Supply Representative for Smith and Nephew and Stryker for most of his career. He retired in Florence, Alabama and soon afterwards, he and Sharon moved to Appleton, WI.
Charles enjoyed hunting Muskies “up North” with his brother-in-law, Steve. He also enjoyed golfing, hunting, photography, and raising Labrador dogs.

Charles was baptized and confirmed in the Roman Catholic Church in Hayward, California and became a member of the Episcopalian Church in Collierville, TN with Sharon and his sons. He said his greatest accomplishment was finding the Lord at Cursillo #117 and assisting with the #136 in Alabama through Trinity Episcopal Church. He described Cursillo as a “Mountain Top” experience for him. He loved being with Sharon at Camp MacDowell in the spring.

Charles is survived by his wife, Sharon; their three sons and their wives; three granddaughters; his brother, Jack Martin and his partner-in-life, Mark Meier; and half-sisters: Mary (Martin) and Michael Blasquez; and Darlene (Martin) Bishop. He is further survived by his brothers-in-law, Steve and Carolyn Danielson; and John Hanson, as well as by many nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; a half-brother, Terry Martin; and half-sister, Catherine (Martin) Burgess; as well as by two sisters-in-law, Carol (Danielson) Schreiner and Joyce (Danielson) Hanson.
