W-F second at Akey Duals

Indians have four champions

By Greg Seubert

In the end, it was too much Stratford and not enough Weyauwega-Fremont.

The teams went into the final round of the 27th annual Akey Duals wrestling meet in Weyauwega Dec. 8 with 4-0 records, but Stratford returned home with the tournament title after handing the Indians a 55-15 defeat.

The Indians went into the matchup with the Tigers after defeating Ripon, North Fond du Lac/St. Mary’s Springs, Waupaca and Seymour in the first four rounds.

“We beat some good teams in this tournament with aggressive, solid wrestling,” coach Tim Potratz said. “Our boys worked for pins, won the close matches and outhustled our opponents all day. Stratford was just too good to overcome in the final match.”

W-F wrestlers combined to post a 45-12 record in the tournament, with Cian Fischer (126 pounds), Justin Kempf (138), Logan Kicherer (160) and Austin Bartel (195) finishing first.

Carter Greening (113), Easton Groskreutz (120), Adam Batten (145), Ean Marker (152) and Tyler Wetzel (182) placed second; and Skylor Maynard (220) placed third. Ben Strehlow posted a 2-2 record at 170 and Mason Marquette went 1-2 at 132.

Colby Bernhardt finished second for Waupaca at 132 with a 3-2 record.

“Our kids have built some impressive records so far this season and they have earned them against some very good competition,” Potratz said. “It is fun to watch these kids compete. Our junior and seniors are dominating and our young kids are competing hard to do their job for the team.”

The Indians will return to Central Wisconsin Conference dual play at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, in Manawa.
