Republican senator’s courage

An act of courage has received little recognition by those who desire good government in Wisconsin.

The lone Republican vote of state Sen. Rob Cowles against the Republican leadership attempt to thwart the preference of the majority of voters for a change in focus of government has not been appropriately recognized.

Cowles, who has served in the Legislature since the 1980s, frequently, led efforts to preserve our environment, and support many of the values that used to guide the Republican Party.

Today’s party has left the old values behind and forgotten the kind of government that regardless of party worked for the best interests of the state’s residents. The party was once a tool for good government, not a God to be worshiped on its own. There were rules of conduct, precedent and mutual respect that helped to assure government of the people, frequently meaning compromise by the parties.

Cowles’ action is a throwback to those days and hopefully a precursor of the future. I applaud his action and hope it will be rewarded by bringing the attention of others to see the kind of leadership that was valued in the past (and universally recognized during the recent funerals of past leaders McCain/Bush) have not totally disappeared from the political scene.
