Crews respond to kitchen fire

Waupaca firefighters responded to a report of a house filled with smoke Sunday, Jan. 13.

A call came in at 7:39 p.m. for 813 Park Ave., in Waupaca.

Upon arrival crews found the entire house filled with thick smoke. They extinguished a small fire in the kitchen and opened the windows to ventilate the smoke.

The entire kitchen sustained heavy smoke damage. Smoke and soot were throughout the house.

Firefighters removed the cabinets above the stove and refrigerator and removed the drywall ceiling and insulation to check for trapped heat.

The fire started near the electric stove. The only fire damage to the stove were the controls.

Crews found no circuit breakers tripped, but they turned off the all the breakers to the kitchen.

There were smoke detectors in the house, but they were not sounding when firefighters arrived.

Nobody was reported injured.

The loss was estimated at $17,000, according to the Waupaca Fire Department’s Report.
