Waupaca homes evacuated

Gas leak on Ninth Street

Twenty-eight homes near the intersection of Demarest and Ninth streets in Waupaca were temporarily evacuated Thursday, Jan. 24, due to a natural gas leak.

Shortly before 7:30 a.m., a 911 call reported smelling gas.

A police officer went to the corner, but was unable to locate the source.

Waupaca fire crews arrived, used a gas monitor and located a strong odor of gas coming from a storm sewer.

While waiting for WE crews to arrive, emergency personnel evacuated homes on Ninth, Demarest, Columbia, Eighth and 10th streets.

WE Energies traced the leak to 920 Demarest Street, where they found small amounts of gas in the basement.

The gas to that house was turned off, and the leak was found in the front yard.

WE Energies excavated a trench and repaired the leak in the main.
