Officer assisted citizen in need

On Tuesday, Jan. 22, as I left the Waupaca Senior Center, I found my car windows frosted over.

As I checked my car for an ice scraper it became apparent that I did not have one in the car, obviously took it out last summer when I was cleaning my car. I turned on the defroster and when I had what I thought was a big enough hole to see through the windshield I headed down the road.

Yes, I know not the best plan of action but with snow falling I wanted to get home for the weather report was a big snow was on its way. So, I cautiously took my chances and proceed to drive my car. When I got to the corner of Main and Fulton I noticed a squad car behind me

As I made my left-hand turn I saw the squad car lights go on. So, I immediately pulled over and waited for the officer to come up to my window and tell me what law I had just broken.

As he approached my car I said, “Hello officer, what did I do?” He looked at me and asked, “Do you have an ice scraper in your car?” I said, “No, I don’t.” He then walked back to his squad car.

I sat there thinking, great there goes my good driving record and my new driver’s license is going to have a staple in it. For I thought he was coming back to issue me a ticket but to my surprise he came back with an ice scraper and proceeded to clean my windows front, side and back.

I was totally surprised, I felt very humbled by his actions and totally grateful for his kindness. I said, “Thank you officer,” that was very kind, his reply was “I couldn’t let you drive like that.” I asked him his name, he said “Officer Rodenz,” and I thanked him again and drove on my way with a clearer vision of the roadway.

We often take for granted the good things our police department does for our community. It is especially easy to forget the little things, like helping a senior citizen clean her car windows so she can drive more safely. Officers serving this community go unnoticed many times but not this time.

I wanted to give Officer Rodenz special recognition for his good deed, he deserves it. The Waupaca Police Department and the Community can be very proud of how this officer conducts himself. Thank you again, Officer Rodenz. We are very lucky to have you serving this community.
