Shopko closing two Waupaca stores

The Ashwaubenon-based retailer released an updated list Wednesday, Feb. 6, of store closings nationwide.

A total of 251 stores will shut down across the country with 42 of those stores in Wisconsin.

In Waupaca, the Shopko Hometown on West Fulton Street is slated to close on May 12, while the Shopko Express Pharmacy at the hospital on 800 Riverside Drive will close on May 5.

Shopko has announced closures in nearby Stevens Point, Plover, Shawano, Seymour and Appleton.

Clintonville’s Shopko has not been included in the list.

Shopko filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January.

It is restructuring its business “as a result of excess debt and ongoing competitive pressures,” according to a statement posted on its website.

“This decision is a difficult, but necessary one,” CEO Russ Steinhorst said in a company statement. “In a challenging retail environment, we have had to make some very tough choices, but we are confident that by operating a smaller and more focused store footprint, we will be able to build a stronger Shopko that will better serve our customers, vendors, employees and other stakeholders through this process.”

Shopko built a 35,000-square-foot Shopko Hometown store at 825 W. Fulton St. in Waupaca, and the store opened on Sept. 24, 2012.

In 2012, Shopko announced the transfer of prescription files from Waupaca Woods Pharmacy to its pharmacy on West Fulton Street.

Shopko also acquired the Riverside Clinic Pharmacy, located inside the hospital, in 2012.
