Glory days of gas stations

Waupaca Historical Society hosts program

Draeger

The glory days of gas stations will be the topic of the next Waupaca Historical Society program.

Jim Draeger will present “Fill’er Up: The Glory Days of Wisconsin Gas Stations.” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Holly Center.

He is the co-author of the book of the same name, which was also made into a PBS documentary.

Draeger will provide a glimpse into the days when full service and free oil changes were the rule and the local gas station was a gathering place for neighbors.

Years ago, Waupaca was dotted with gas and service stations.

In fact, in 1949, the city boasted 11 filling stations.

Today, the iconic and memorable gas stations are gone, but their memories still live on.

The program and refreshments are sponsored by Joseph Bauknecht and F. Thomas and Hope K. Olson.
The Holly Center is located at 321 S. Main St., in Waupaca.
