I-S teacher killed in crash

Andrew Schefelker

An Iola-Scandinavia science teacher was the sole fatality in the 131-vehicle pileup on Interstate 41 in Neenah Sunday, Feb. 24.

According to District Administrator Ray Przekurat, Andrew Schefelker, 30, was in his first year of teaching science to Iola-Scandinavia middle and high school students.

“He also helped out the school with supervising activities and selling event tickets and was very involved in Boy Scouts,” Przekurat said in a press release.

The I-S School District was among 55 schools and school districts statewide closed Monday due to icy road conditions following Sunday’s winter storm.

Counselors will be available to students and staff at the Iola-Scandinavia Middle/High School.

Calling it a “chain reaction crash,” Chief Deputy John Maltz with Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that of the 71 people transported to area hospitals from the crash scene, 66 were treated and released.
