Patrick, Michael H.

Michael H. Patrick, age 82 of Waupaca, WI passed away on Monday, February 25, 2019 at Omro Care Center.

He was born on March 31, 1936 the son of the late William and Dorothy (Heath) Patrick in Chicago, IL. Michael married Catherine Russell in 1957 and Beverly Crane in 1976. Michael was both a scientist and an artist. He attended medical school at University of Chicago and then earned a Ph. D. in Biophysics. His research and teaching career included positions at Johns Hopkins, Southwest Center for Advanced Studies, University of Texas at Dallas and University of Wisconsin Madison. He was Co-director of the Center for Biological Education at UW Madison, and co-founder of 3D Molecular Designs at Milwaukee School of Engineering. Mike loved the land and growing things. He and Beverly moved to a tree farm in the Waupaca area in 1985 where he experimented with Shiitake mushroom farming and community gardening while tending his pine plantations. Mike was an avid photographer all his life, moving from film and chemical darkroom on to digital photography. He won many awards for his work and had a one-person exhibit of his photography of the Greek Island Santorini. He founded the Mid Wisconsin Photography Group and was well-known locally for his art and leadership. Mike loved traveling. He traveled to Japan, Spain, Germany, Brazil, Budapest, Austria and Prague for scientific meetings, and later to Greece and the Greek Isles, Patagonian Chile and Iceland for photography. He also enjoyed gourmet cooking and wood working.

Michael is survived by his wife, Beverly Crane of Waupaca; children, Kelly Eryn Patrick of Bloomington, IN; Jeremy (Elizabeth) William Patrick-Crane of Appleton, WI; Meghan Jeannette Patrick-Crane of San Francisco, CA; grandchildren, William Joseph Patrick of Chapel Hill, NC; Sarah Corinne Patrick of Chapel Hill, NC; brother, Peter (Leda) Patrick of Miami, FL; sister, Patricia Patrick of Portland, OR; also, many other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Michael is preceded in death by his parents, son, Kevin Michael Patrick; sister, Sharon Patrick; and previous wife, Catherine Ann Patrick.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon with a luncheon to follow on Saturday, March 2nd at Lind Town Hall, Waupaca. Holly Funeral Home of Waupaca is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, a gift of food is appreciated for the Celebration of Life luncheon.
