Master Naturalist course planned

Class to be held at Hartman Creek

The University of Wisconsin Extension will offer two Master Naturalist training courses this year at Hartman Creek State Park near Waupaca.

One course will be held on six Saturdays in April and May and the other is scheduled in August.

The April and May course will be held April 6, April 13, April 27, May 4, May 11 and May 18. The August training is a one-week intensive course slated for Monday to Saturday, Aug. 5-10.

Both courses will be based at the park’s heated shelter and field trips are planned each day. Trips will include hikes in the woods to study different plant communities, forests, fungi, dragonflies and birds; water quality monitoring; and aquatic animals. A geology field trip is also planned and a kayak trip will be held if there is interest.

Modeled after the Master Gardener Program, Master Naturalists are becoming a corps of informed volunteers throughout the state.

Scholarships are available for the course, which costs $275. Class size is limited to 20 participants.

The course fee includes a notebook of resource materials; 40 hours of training in natural history, interpretation and conservation stewardship; and membership in the volunteer network.

Once trained, Wisconsin Master Naturalists volunteers in education, interpretation, stewardship or citizen science. Volunteers must complete 40 hours of service each year to maintain certification, as well as eight hours of advanced training.

Details on the course can be found at www.wimasternaturalist.org or www.friendsofhartmancreek.org.
