Fishing pier planned for Seven Maples Nature Area

Shadows on the Wolf funds project

By Bert Lehman

The Shadows on the Wolf organization will fund the construction of an accessible fishing pier at Seven Maples Nature Area in Clintonville.

City Administrator Sharon Eveland told the Clintonville Parks and Recreation Committee at its March 7 meeting that Shadows on the Wolf approached the city with interest in implementing the pier.

“The amount that they were willing to give us is up to $15,000,” Eveland said. “Depending on what the final shape of that [pier] is it may end up being slightly over that.”

A preliminary estimate has the cost around $13,500.

Eveland told the committee that Lynne Simpson, whose family had donated the land to the city for the creation of Seven Maples Nature Area, liked the idea and supported ADA-accessible fishing facilities.

Eveland also acknowledged that Simpson questioned whether another ADA fishing facility was needed because the city already has one in a different location.

“She actually suggested an ADA kayak or canoe launch,” Eveland said.

While understanding the importance of the city offering diverse options, Eveland said she didn’t want the city to miss out on this opportunity.

“Shadows on the Wolf is focused on the hunting aspect of the outdoors through education and ensuring opportunities for all people,” Eveland said.

She added: “I think it would be a mistake to miss out on another organization generously covering such a large amount of the project cost.”

Currently there is not an ADA-accessible path to the area where the pier would be built. The committee was told grant money is available for the city to pursue to cover the cost of constructing a path.

Committee Chairman Steve Kettenhoven said constructing the ADA pier is a great idea.

“I think we need to look at this as more than just a fishing structure,” he said, “because with the location of Seven Maples being at the end of the channel out here, I think it’d be fantastic for just sightseeing. … I think it will be utilized a lot more than just people fishing.”

He added, “I don’t know how we could turn down an opportunity like this when it’s potentially going to be fully funded.”

The committee recommended the city work with Shadows on the Wolf on the project.

Shadows on the Wolf has installed approximately 13 of these piers at various locations from Shawano to New London, the Clintonville City Council was told at its March 12 meeting.

The council approved the committee’s recommendation.
