Two charged in heroin death

Stern, Amundson face homicide charges

Eric D. Stern, 37, New London, and Keith E. Amundson, 39, Waupaca, were charged Friday with first-degree reckless homicide and delivery of narcotics as party to a crime.

Stern and Amundson are accused of killing Shane Heuer, who was 26 years old when he overdosed on heroin at his New London home on Oct. 4, 2018.

Amundson allegedly sold the heroin to Heuer and Stern allegedly made arrangements for the sale.

When his father checked on him around noon on Oct. 5, he found Heuer in bed, unresponsive and cold to the touch.

The father called 911 and police and paramedics came to the house.

Officers found two syringes, two spoons and a gem bag under the bed. The contents of the bag tested positive for heroin.

Heuer, who was recently released from prison, had been working at Wohlt Cheese since Aug. 22.

New London Police Officer Ryan Denu obtained a list of Heuer’s co-workers and interviewed Stern on Oct. 20.

According to the criminal complaint, Stern told Ryan that a co-worker gave him a ride from Wohlt around 11:45 p.m. on Oct. 4. He said he saw Heuer at the Kwik Trip on Shawano Street around midnight.

Security video shows Stern and Heuer standing together at the store’s ATM.

Investigators were able to trace Heuer and Stern’s movements that night through a geo-location analyisis of their cell phones.

They believed the two drove to Ogdensburg, where Amundson was living at the time, then back to New London.

After Stern was arrested on March 27, New London Police Detective Chase Schroeder interviewed Stern again and read Oct. 4 text messages between Heuer and Stern that seemed to be arranging a drug deal.

Schroeder told Stern he wanted the truth of what happened that night from start to finish.

According to the criminal complaint, Stern said he set up the deal while at work and Heuer drove them to Ogdensburg, where they met Amundson in his driveway.

Heuer allegedly purchased two bins of heroin for $100 from Amundson through the driver’s side window.

Stern said Heuer later broke off a chunk of the heroin and gave it to him as payment for arranging the drug deal.

Stern is scheduled to appear in court at 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Judge Troy Nielsen issued a warrant Friday for Amundson’s arrest.
