Manawa Rural firefighters responded to the home of Malia Ryan and Jeremy Vaughan, E6268 Progress Road in Manawa, at 1:16 p.m. Saturday, March 30.

Fire Chief Rob Rosenau said heavy smoke was seen coming from the home upon arrival.

He said the occupants and pets were all safe.

“The fire started in the back of the home, but the exact cause is still under investigation,” he said.

A firefighter was able to remove the family’s fish from the home.

“We have had that fish for five years,” said Ryan. “That meant a lot to the kids.”

Manawa was assisted by Iola, Scandinavia, Marion and Clintonville departments.

The family, which also includes a 9-year-old girl and 10-year-old twin boys, is expected to be displaced for an extensive period of time.
