Poetry celebration underway

April is National Poetry Month, and the celebration continues in Waupaca.

The Waupaca Community Arts Board and Waupaca Area Public Library are collaborating to offer poetry activities throughout the month.

Several events are planned during the week of April 21.

Poetry Reading in a Smoky-less Bar is at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, at 22 Lakes Brewery.

Several area poets are reading their original poetry, and others may join in during an opem mic.

The poets people may meet that night include Peggy Farrell, Jane Peterson, Pat Phair, Patricia Reckrey, Rick Simmons, Rob Smith, Patricia Williams and Bill Zimmerman.

Beer, soda and munchies are available.

22 Lakes Brewery is located at 107 W. Fulton St., in downtown Waupaca.

Poem in Your Pocket Day is taking place throughout the day on Thursday, April 25.

People are invited to make copies of their favorites poem written by themselves or poets.

They then put the poems in their pockets and share copies with others.

Poetry Committee members are among those walking around in the community that day to share poems.

Poem in Your Pocket Sewing Day is also on Thursday, April 25.

The Waupaca Area Public Library is hosting the event from 3-7 p.m.

All materials are being supplied, including sewing machines, fabric, glue, paper and decorations.

Children younger than sixth grade are t be accompanied by an adult.

Registration is not required.

Library staff members are assisting attendees with the project.

Throughout the month, people are invited to write poems on a manual typewriter at the library and to create blackout poems there as well.

The library is supplying book pages, supplies and instruction for blackout poetry.

People are also invited to find a poem hidden at area retailers for a chance to wine a book of poetry.
