T-Birds still perfect

Iola-Scandy undefeated in division play

The Iola-Scandinavia softball team recently won two Central Wisconsin Conference games and lost one nonconference game.

After dropping 4-1 decision game to Winneconne April 22, the Thunderbirds were able to squeak by Weyauwega-Fremont 2-1 April 23 and beat Menominee Indian April 26.

The T-Birds are 4-0 in CWC East Division play and 4-5 overall.

Iola-Scandinavia took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Winneconne responded with two runs in the first inning and two more in the second to complete the scoring.

The T-Birds managed only two hits for the game and both came in the first inning. Hannah Melum singled with two outs, stole second and scored on Katie Cherek’s single to right field. Cherek was called out at second base trying to stretch her single into a double.

Mackenzie Kielblock allowed four hits and six walks and finished the game with 11 strikeouts.

The T-Birds managed only two runs on five hits, but it was enough to get the win on the Indians’ home field.

Kielblock held the Indians to one hit and struck out 12 batters.

She also scored her team’s first run in the third inning. She singled, stole second and third bases and scored on Taylor Kielblock’s groundout.

Weyauwega-Fremont tied the game in the third with an unearned run, but the T-Birds came up with the game-winning run in the fourth. Lyncoln Podgorny walked, advanced to third on two passed balls and scored on Alexa Christoph’s sacrifice fly.

Hannah Melum had two hits for Iola-Scandinavia, including a triple in the third inning.

Iola-Scandinavia scored seven runs in the first inning and went into to defeat the Eagles for the second time this season.

Cherek had three hits of the T-Birds’ 15 hits and drove in two runs; Mackenzie Kielblock, Melum, Podgorny, Ashlynn Schmies and Anna Rustad each had two hits; and Podgorny hit a two-run home run over the right-field fence in the fifth inning.

Mackenzie Kielblock held the Eagles to three hits and struck out nine batters.
