By Erik Buchinger

A 10-year-old boy died on the way to Hortonville Elementary School from injuries sustained in a three-vehicle accident Thursday shortly before 8 a.m. on Highway 15 in Hortonville.

The boy is from Kaukauna, and no names have been released.

A car traveling westbound carrying the boy and the driver on Highway 15 struck a pickup truck that was stopped in traffic from behind and careened into the eastbound lane. It was then struck by a Hortonville Area School District bus.

No children were on the school bus at the time of the crash.

Outagamie County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Ryan Carpenter met with reporters at a news conference and said the driver of the car sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital via ambulance.

The bus driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries but was transported to a hospital.

The driver of the pickup truck was uninjured.

Highway 15 was closed for several hours from County Highway JJ to Greendale Road.

The school district confirmed the 10-year-old boy was a Hortonville Elementary student.

“Counselors will continue to be available in the district,” the district said in a social media post. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of this student.”
