Waupaca DI team at global finals

A ninth-grade Waupaca High School Destination Imagination team completed a rewarding season.

The Blanket Making Babes earned second place at their regional competition in March and third place at the state competition in April.

As a result, the  advanced to the Destination Imagination’s Global Finals.

The Blanket Making Babes team members are Brooke Peterson, Charlotte Buchman, Chloe Eller, Gracie Lewis, Kylee Berzsenyi and Maci Tripp.

Destination Imagination is an international, educational program that encourages innovation, teamwork and creative problem-solving.

The goal of the program is to equip students to become the next generation of innovators and leaders.

Each year, DI releases new challenges in technology, science, fine arts, improv theater, structural design or service learning.

Each challenge enables student teams to learn and experience the creative process from imagination to innovation.

The WHS team chose the service learning challenge, which requires them to identify a community need, then create a plan to meet that need.

The girls joined an effort suggested by Bailey Mitchell to make fleece tie blankets for teens staying in the Ronald McDonald of Eastern Wisconsin.

With Bailey’s diagnosis of dysautonomia, she has spent a lot of time at the Ronald McDonald house and was aware of the needs for blankets for older youth.

The Blanket Making Babes participated in a blanket making party that Bailey coordinated and independently made 15 blankets to contribute to the cause.

Altogether more than 90 blankets were made.

As part of their eight-minute presentation to the appraisers, the team had to write and present a play that built suspense about characters who attempt an escape while providing details about their project.

Throughout their presentation, they had also had to reveal several clues that provided information about their project and include information about the future impact of the blankets.

Global Finals took place May 21-25, in Kansas City, MO. More than 8,000 students from 15 countries presented their challenge solutions.

The Blanket Making Babes placed 23rd out of 44 teams in the secondary high school level.
