Reduced office hours for new city building inspector

New London switched to a part-time building inspector Monday, July 8, following Paul Hanlon’s retirement after 27 years of service to the community.

The city has contracted with JK Inspections for a part-time building inspector, Jon Schulz. Office hours will be Tuesday and Thursday from 3-4:30 p.m. Inspections and additional office hours are available by appointment.

Residents are advised to plan ahead and check with the building inspector, 920-850-2867, or City Hall, 920-982-8500, if they are unsure whether they need a building permit. Building permits must be obtained before starting a project, or the fees will be doubled.

The city’s building inspector is responsible for issuing permits, conducting inspections, enforcing the zoning code and providing staff support to the New London Planning Commission.

A building permit is needed for a variety of building projects including:

  • Building an addition on a house.
  • Building a garage.
  • Building a deck.
  • New wiring.
  • Installing a new furnace or air conditioning.
  • Remodeling a house.
  • Installing new siding.
  • Installing new windows on a house.
  • New plumbing.
  • Changing the pitch of a roof.
  • Resurfacing sidewalks or driveways.
  • New construction.
  • Swimming pools.
  • Fences.
  • Storage sheds.

The New London Police Department, 920-982-8505, handles complaints involving junk and garbage.

When calling to make a complaint make sure you provide the address of the property, your name and phone number where you can be reached, and the landlord’s name if the property is a rental.
