Kuzin’s Kustom to unveil car

Custom-built car to show Iola

By Holly Neumann

Bill Stull, with Kuzin’s Kustom Body and Paint in Custer, will unveil his 1970s-themed car Friday, June 12.

He made specifically for 2019 Iola Car Show.

Stull, who has been in the business for 28 years, had his cars featured on the posters for the show this year.

When the car show reached out to him to see if he had a vehicle to feature at the show, he decided to build one.

“I told them I had all kinds of fresh builds but then I named one that they thought sounded pretty cool,” he said. “And they asked if I could build it in time for the car show.”

With the help of his co-workers and a lot of overtime, that is just what he did.

“I am not going to tell you what it is just now,” said Stull. “But it is a 1970s car. It is nothing new. It’s a mid ‘70s car that is jacked, rigged and has got everything ‘70s in it.”

Stull is joined at the car show by Lonny Speer, Ryan Evans and Mike Henry with Counts Kustoms in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Jason Vander Woude, with NSD Paintworks in Lynwood, Illinois. They all share a passion for creativity and custom cars.

When it comes to painting their cars, they choose Matrix System Automotive Finishes.

“Matrix is a paint company that came into my life three years ago,” said Stull. “I was watching Counts Kustoms and the cars they were turning out, and I saw the Matrix signs in their shop, and I thought if they can do it, so can I.”

“The culture that comes with custom painting is a brotherhood,” said Evans. “Too many times over the decades we have almost watched custom painting die. Too many times the older generation has taken their customs and their secrets and they have literally died with them. Today’s generation is passing on every little trick and every little thing they know world-wide to keep the custom culture going.”

Mavericks of Color

Recently, Stull, Speer and Vander Woude were recognized as the 2019 Matrix Mavericks of Color.

“The Mavericks pave the way for the rest of us with the Matrix Company,” said Evans. “Everything that Matrix has to offer it literally lends itself to the custom painter. Anyone can understand the basics of Matrix.”

According to Evans, these men are not just custom painters, they are artists and being a Mavericks of Color is a big deal for them.

“I thought it was a joke when they first called me,” Vander Woude said. “I have been painting for a long time and it is a big honor to stand up here with these guys.”

They have all enjoyed the Iola Car Show this far.

“There are thousands of cars. This is what we live for,” said Evans. “The hidden gems are here. You don’t see this in Vegas or on the West Coast.”

Anyone interested is seeing the unveiling of the car done by Kuzin’s Kustom Body and Paint can stop by the Matrix Tent, located northwest of the tower in the modified show car area.
