Winchester hosts Jerry Apps

Civilian Conservation Corps in Wisconsin

Jerry Apps will present “The Civilian Conservation Corps in Wisconsin” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 29, at the Waupaca Area Public Library.

The program is part of the Winchester Academy All-Stars series that brings previous speakers back to Waupaca.

Author, storyteller and historian, Apps’s presentation is based on his new book, The Civilian Conservation Corps in Wisconsin: Nature’s Army at Work.

Between 1933 and 1942, the Civilian Conservation Corps, a New Deal relief program, was at work across America.

Young men lived in rustic CCC camps planting trees, cutting trails and reversing the effects of soil erosion.

By preserving Wisconsin’s natural beauty, they not only discovered purpose in their labor, but founded an enduring legacy of environmental stewardship.

Apps will share some of the CCC’s history in Wisconsin from the Northwoods to the Driftless Area, creating a map of where and how more than 125 CCC camps left indelible marks on the landscape.

Born and raised on a Wisconsin farm, Apps is professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and author of more than 35 books. He has written more than 800 newspaper and magazine articles and columns.

He has won awards for his writing from the Wisconsin Historical Society, the Wisconsin Library Association, American Library Association, and Barnes and Noble Bookstores, among others.

This program is free and open to the public.

Winchester Academy program expenses are funded through sponsors and tax-deductible donations.

Apps’ program is sponsored by Vic and Chris Anthony.
