Comedy Crews on Chain

Chief Waupaca hosts stand-up comics

By Angie Landsverk

Tim Hunter will host his second comedy boat cruise on Waupaca’s Chain O’ Lakes this summer.

The Comedy Crews will take place Friday, Aug. 23, on Clear Water Harbor’s Chief Waupaca.

“I did one in June,” Hunter said. “The people on stage probably had 40-plus years experience. They are people who if a big name comes to Milwaukee, they are the people opening.”

The show featured four comedians.

“It sold out in 10 days, so I decided to do another one,” he said.

Hunter is a Waupaca native.

He works in marketing and started doing stand-up comedy in 2013.

“I don’t do this for a living, but I am working more into the professional realm,” Hunter said.

He became involved in stand up after moving to Milwaukee.

He has always loved public speaking, but said open mic is different.

“It goes really fast,” Hunter said of the few minutes someone is on stage in that type of venue.

He said it takes a lot of time for a comedian to get to 18 minutes of material.

“If it’s done well, it feels like they’re just talking,” he said.

Hunter worked at Clear Water Harbor during high school and college.

“I got to thinking it would be a cool way to go out and take in a comedy show and go out on the Chief,” he said.

Tickets available

Fifty seats are available for the Aug. 23 show at $35 per ticket.

People may purchase tickets at clearwaterharbor.com/boat-cruises and by visiting or calling the business.

Boarding is at 6:30 p.m., with seats on a first-come, first-served basis.

The boats leaves at 7 p.m., and the approximately 1 1/2-hour show will start by 7:30 p.m., Hunter said.

This show will feature four different comedians than the first one.

They are Chris Schmidt, Steve Hartman, Dana Ehrmann and Ryan Mason.

Schmidt is a Milwaukee comic.

He is a producer of the Cream City Comedy Festival and has performed in bars, clubs and theaters across the Midwest.

Hartman used to sell fire trucks for a living, but is a stand-up comedian.

Ehrmann first tried stand-up when she was a student at Carthage College, in Kenosha.

Based in Milwaukee, she has performed at the Milwaukee, Floodwater and Great Spirit comedy festivals, and opened for Todd Barry, Hari Kondabolu and Charlie Berens.

Mason is a veteran of Milwaukee’s comedy scene.

He has performed throughout the Midwest and United States, and has served as a house comedian for many of Milwaukee’s major venues, including Riverside Theater and Turner Hall.

“Just show up and have fun,” Hunter said. “This will be your last opportunity to see it until next summer.”
