The Innocence of Youth

Patrick Wood

Dear Reader,

Tonight I looked and watched for shooting stars. Have you ever done that?

When I was a kid I used to lie in the grass at night with a friend and search for shooting stars. I knew that if you could see one you could make a wish and it would certainly come true if you didn’t tell anyone about it.

Ah, the pure innocence of those younger years. I can think of wishes I would make now, and it reads like the intentions at Mass—that the hungry will be fed, that the homeless will be sheltered, and that those in poor health will be relieved of pain. But it takes more than wishes; it also takes actions.

This is why this newspaper is sponsoring an effort to help the homeless. Stay tuned for more details.
