Comets fall short

All three goals come in second half

By Greg Seubert

Mosinee ended the 2018 season for the Waupaca boys’ soccer team by handing the Comets a 2-0 loss in a WIAA Division 3 sectional semifinal game.

The two teams met again to open the 2019 season Aug. 29 at Comet Field and Mosinee returned home with a 2-1 win.

Neither team found the net in the first half, but all three of the game’s goals in the opening nine minutes of the second half.

The Comets, playing their first game under new coach Dave Clark, broke the scoreless tie 2:23 into the half, as Keegan Turrubiates scored off of an assist from Max Gusmer.

The lead didn’t last long, as Mosinee’s Cole Holtz tied the game less than five minutes later with an unassisted goal. Holtz also assisted on Duarte Pedro’s game-winning goal 1:20 later.

Waupaca outshot the Indians 24-7.

“They did everything we asked them to do in this game,” Clark said. “The ball didn’t go in the net and that was the only difference. We had a ton of opportunities and that happens in soccer. Sometimes, you don’t finish.”

Clark likes the way his players responded to a new coach after Cory Nagel stepped down.

“Everyone has been on board,” he said. “You can see it on the field.”

The Comets lost first-team all-conference players Jack Snider and Forrest Ziebell, second-teamer Bailey Colden and honorable mention player Camryn Borland from last year’s team that won a regional championship.

Returning players include senior Keenin Polebitski and junior Dawson Patzke, honorable mention all-conference selections last year as a forward and defender, respectively.

“We have at 14 starters on the team and seven guys on JV that would be varsity starters for half the teams in the conference,” Clark said. “There’s not one guy. It’s a team game, they’re all going to play and we’re going to win together.”

The Comets compete in the North Eastern Conference. Fox Valley Lutheran won the conference championship last year with a 7-0-1 record, followed by Waupaca (5-2-1), Freedom (4-0-4), Wrightstown (4-2-2), Marinette (3-3-2), Clintonville (2-3-3), Luxemburg-Casco (2-4-2), Little Chute (1-6-1) and Denmark (0-8-0).

Clark expects Fox Valley Lutheran to be one of the teams to beat.

“FVL’s always good and that is our last home game of the season,” he said. “There is a good chance that’ll be for all the marbles if all goes our way.”

Clark believes his team could be in the hunt for a North Eastern championship.

“That and more,” he said. “From day one, we’ve talked about getting to state this year. That’s our goal. Waupaca hasn’t been there yet, so this could be our year to get there.”
