Bartel wins at Standing Rocks

It didn’t take long for Abby Bartel to win her first cross country race of the season.
The Weyauwega-Fremont sophomore won the girls’ race at the Standing Rocks Invitational Aug. 29 at Standing Rocks County Park.
Bartel, who competed with the Weyauwega-Fremont girls’ team at the WIAA State Cross Country Championships as a freshman last year, placed first with a time of 20:08.
Teammate Allison Halat placed fourth in 22:36, while Iola-Scandinavia’s Alyssa Tap placed fifth in 22:59. Brooke Hansen and Abbi Williams placed 17th and 18th, respectively, with times of 26:25 and 26:55.
Amherst won the girls’ championship with 30 points, followed by Brillion (52), Waupaca (96), St. Mary Catholic (114), Iola-Scandinavia (120), Tri-County (128) and Marion (184). Weyauwega-Fremont, Manawa and Clintonville had incomplete teams.
Waupaca turned in three top-10 finishes in the boys’ race. Abram Jackson placed seventh in 18:37, Sawyer Ziebell finished eighth in 18:45 and Tyler Rogney turned in a time of 18:59 to place 10th.
Weyauwega-Fremont’s Patrick Long placed ninth in 18:55 and teammate Carson Kester finished 20th in 20:10.
Brillion won the boys’ championship with 45 points, followed by Clintonville (54), St. Mary Catholic (82), Waupaca (106), Weyauwega-Fremont (107), Iola-Scandinavia (145), Amherst (164), Manawa (217) and Marion (273).
