Charges follow U.S. 10 crash

A Waupaca County judge issued an arrest warrant for  Sergio Contreras Martinez, 34, Shiocton.

Martinez failed to make a court appearance after being released on a $1,500 cash bond.

Prosecutors charged  him with injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle and causing great bodily harm while operating without a valid license.

About 11:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, Waupaca County Deputy Andrew Thorpe responded to a head-on crash on U.S. Highway 10 in rural Weyauwega.

According to the criminal complaint, Martinez had been driving a pickup truck eastbound in the westbound lanes when he slammed head-on into an oncoming vehicle.

Thorpe found the westbound driver trapped in his vehicle, unresponsive and with serious injuries to his head and face.

The westbound driver was flown to ThedaCare in Neenah where he was in a coma due to brain swelling, the complaint says.

Martinez was also injured. An ambulance transported him to ThedaCare in Waupaca.

A preliminary breath test indicated Martinez had a .125 blood-alcohol content.

Police took Martinez into custody after he was released from the hospital.

Martinez, who had been cited in Shiocton in May for not having a valid driver’s license, had no license when he was arrested after the crash.

Officers identified Martinez by his Mexican ID card.

Martinez posted the $1,500 cash bond on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

He failed to appear in court that same day.
