Library screens ‘Paper Moon’

First Thursday Film Series presents 1973 comedy

The Waupaca Area Public Library will show “Paper Moon” at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3.

“Paper Moon” stars the father-daughter team of Ryan O’Neal and Tatum O’Neal.

They play Moses and Addie Pray as they con their way through the barren landscape of Depression-era Kansas and Missouri.

Directed by Peter Bogdanovich, this 1973 comedy has Madeline Kahn, John Hillerman and Randy Quaid in supporting roles.

Tatum O’Neal, who was 10 years old, won an Oscar for her performance and remains the youngest winner ever in a competitive category.

“Paper Moon” was based on the novel “Addie Pray” by Joe David Brown.

Waupaca’s First Thursday Film audiences may recognize Brown’s name. He adapted the screenplay for “Stars in My Crown” from his novel of the same name.

“‘Paper Moon’ is notable for its deep-focus black-and-white cinematography, long takes, snappy dialogue and source music,” according to Robert Cloud, who will fill in for Dr. Jack Rhodes and introduce the film.

In addition to Tatum O’Neal’s Academy Award, the film was nominated for Oscars for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound.
