Bears hand T-Birds fourth loss

Iola-Scandinavia drops home game

By Greg Seubert
Iola-Scandinavia steamrolled through the Central Wisconsin-Large Conference last year and eventually capped an undefeated football season with a WIAA Division 6 state championship.

It’s a different story this season, however.

Iola-Scandinavia never had a lead against the Bears and trailed by as many as 15 points.

The T-Birds went three-and-out on each of their first three drives, while the Bears started their first three drives on Iola-Scandinavia’s half of the field.

Max Sokolski’s 23-yard run with 4:40 remaining in the first quarter gave the Bears a 7-0 run, but the T-Birds cut into the lead on their next drive. Parker Prahl scored from 4 yards out in the opening minute of the second quarter to make it 7-6.

Bonduel added to its lead on the Bears’ next drive, as Isaac Banker’s 7-yard run gave the visitors a 13-6 lead.

Sokolski scored from a yard out with 8:08 left in the third quarter to give the Bears a 20-6 lead. Will Cady helped set up the T-Birds’ next score with a 59-yard run and he later completed the 68-yard drive with a 3-yard run midway through the third quarter to cut the Bears’ lead to 20-12.

Iola-Scandinavia took advantage of Sokolski’s fumble on Bonduel’s next drive and scored on Prahl’s 38-yard pas to Connor Kurki with 5:32 to go in the third quarter.

The T-Birds went for the tie, but Prahl’s pass on the two-point conversion try fell incomplete.

Bonduel took a 27-18 lead on its next drive with Cole Letter’s 81-yard pass to Banker.

Letter intercepted Prahl’s pass to end the T-Birds’ next drive and the Bears found the end zone and took a 33-18 lead on Sokolski’s 11-yard run with 1:11 remaining in the third quarter.

Cady capped the T-Birds’ next drive with a 1-yard run with 7:39 to go in the game and had the ball again at their 25-yard line after forcing a punt.

Prahl kept the drive alive with a pass to Cady on fourth-and-7, but the T-Birds eventually turned the ball over on downs at the Bonduel 33-yard line with less than a minute to play.

The T-Birds will travel to Manawa for the Wolves’ Homecoming game Friday, Sept. 27, Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
