Comets score early, score often

Waupaca’s first win comes on Homecoming

By Greg Seubert

Waupaca’s football team scored six touchdowns in its first six games of the season.

The Comets added to that total in a big way for Homecoming.

Waupaca scored on eight of its first nine possessions Oct. 4 in a 55-6 Bay Conference win over Green Bay East at Comet Field.

All eight touchdowns came in the first half and four of them were scored on the first play of a drive.

The Comets turned the ball over on downs on the game’s opening drive, but scored on the first play of their next three drives to take a 28-0 lead into the second quarter.

Terry Schmidt capped Waupaca’s first scoring drive with a 54-yard run. The Comets’ next two plays also went for touchdowns, as Aaron Monday scored from 37 yards out and Davis Levine connected with Kadin Wanty for a 12-yard pass.

Waupaca then drove 55 yards in six plays on its next drive, with Levine scoring on a 3-yard run.

A short punt gave the Comets the ball back at the East 43-yard line and Levine eventually connected with Sam Grall for a 13-yard touchdown pass.

The Comets scored on the first play of their next drive, as Levine found the end zone from 28 yards out and Waupaca had a 41-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

East answered on its next drive with Alex Schlag’s 62-yard quarterback keeper. That turned out to be the Red Devils’ only score.

Waupaca added two more touchdowns in the final three minutes of the first half on Craig McCourt’s 34-yard run and Monday’s 3-yard run.

A running clock kept both teams from finding the end zone in the second half.

Waupaca outgained the Red Devils 355-76 on the ground and 108-93 through the air.

The Comets improved to 1-5 in the Bay and 1-6 overall and will host Green Bay West at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, before closing out the regular season Friday, Oct. 18, at West De Pere.
