Bartel wins second CWC title

W-F sophomore places first in Marion

By Greg Seubert

Whether Abby Bartel becomes Weyauwega-Fremont High School’s most successful cross country runner remains to be seen, but she’s off to a good start.

The sophomore won her second Central Wisconsin Conference championship Oct. 17 by winning the girls’ race at the CWC meet in Marion. Her time of 20:02.1 isn’t Bartel’s fastest, but the second-place finisher, Bonduel’s Kara Troxel, crossed the finish line nearly 1 1/2 minutes later.

“I just gave it everything I had,” she said. “I ran for my team. It was hard with all the hills. The hills are definitely difficult. You just have to push it really hard. My goal was to win.”

Bartel helped the Indians finish second in the girls’ standings. Bonduel won the championship with 46 points, followed by Weyauwega-Fremont (51), Rosholt (58), Amherst (62) and Marion (154). Iola-Scandinavia, Manawa, Gresham/Bowler, Menominee Indian, Pacelli, Pittsville, Tri-County and Wittenberg-Birnamwood had incomplete teams.

Weyauwega-Fremont’s other runners included Allison Halat (fourth, 22>07.1); Kaitlyn Monty (17th, 24:00.8); Emma Ziepke (23rd, 24:47.2); Anna Bubolz (24th, 25:06.1); Katie Bleck (31st, 25:55.4); Alicia Lederhaus (42nd, 28:02.7); and Destiny Kempf (48th, 29:02.8).

Alyssa Tap led Iola-Scandinavia by placing 11th in 23:20.6. The Thunderbirds’ other runners included Chloe Timdal (43rd, 28:03.4); Alyssa Grant (44th, 28:37.8); and Tara Thompson (54th, 30:46.1).

Manawa had one runner: Aspen Linjer, who placed 49th in 29:07.9.

The Weyauwega-Fremont boys placed fourth out of 11 teams. Pacelli won the championship with 52 points, followed by Wittenberg-Birnamwood (61), Bonduel (82), Rosholt (91), Weyauwega-Fremont (107), Menominee Indian (191), Amherst and Iola-Scandinavia (211), Manawa (223), Marion (251) and Pittsville (266). Gresham/Bowler had an incomplete team.

Patrick Long led the Indians by placing ninth in 18:41.3. Other places and times included Carson Kester (20th, 19:45.8); Josh Halat (26th, 20:15.3); Jacob Carroll (27th, 20:26); Martin Leyva (28th, 20:27.6); Ethan Patzer (31st, 20:36.6); and Logan Krause (40th, 21:03.6).

Iola-Scandinavia’s runners included Dylan Donovan (23rd, 20:01.6); Ian Koss (30th, 20:34.1); Erik Grenlie (36th, 20:54.3); Aaron Jones (64th, 23:16.5); and Brandon Phillips (70th, 25:10).

Manawa’s runners included Justin Buschke (34th, 20:50.4); Jacob Scheller (44th, 21:37.1); Zachary Schertz (46th, 21:43.3); Ted Emmert (53rd, 22:12.8); Hunter Schlueter (55th, 22:14.1); and Ethan Tellock (72nd, 25:40.8).

Now that the conference meet is out of the way, runners can set their sights on WIAA sectionals, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25-26.

Bartel and the Indians will join Manawa in Westfield Oct. 26 for a Division 3 sectional. Iola-Scandinavia will travel to Athens Oct. 25 for another Division 3 sectional.

Bartel is looking for a second straight trip to the WIAA State Cross Country Championships, where she placed 11th overall in Division 3 last year as a freshman and the Weyauwega-Fremont girls placed 10th out of 16 teams.

“I’m really hoping our team can make it again,” Bartel said. “We’re all working really hard to get there.”
