Library to screen WWII classic

Film tells story of British citizens surviving Nazi bombings

The Waupaca Area Public Library will screen “Mrs. Miniver” at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7.

Dr. Jack Rhodes will introduce the 1942 classic.

“Mrs. Miniver” tells the story of British citizens surviving Nazi bombings during World War II.

Greer Garson stars in the title role, and Walter Pidgeon plays her sincere and sturdy English husband.

Others in the cast include Teresa Wright, Henry Travers, Henry Wilcoxon and Dame May Whitty.

Rhodes said the film contains many effective “You Are There” scenes of military endurance. It features an extended sequence about the retrieval of British forces from the beach at Dunkirk.

Based on a collection of short sketches by Jan Struther, the movie won the Academy Award as Best Picture of 1942, as well as five other Oscars, including Best Director (William Wyler), Best Actress (Greer Garson) and Best Supporting Actress (Teresa Wright).

Even before the great success of the film, Rhodes noted Struther’s book had become a best-seller on both sides of the Atlantic.

Winston Churchill famously declared the book “had done more for the Allied Cause than a flotilla of battleships.”

This program is offered in observance of Veterans Day and in recognition of all veterans of the United States Armed Forces.

Complimentary popcorn, soda and theater treats will be served.
