Benefit for Schmoldt family

Community events for father with leukemia

By Holly Neumann

A benefit for the Kevin and Jodi Schmoldt family will be held from 4–9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, in Scandinavia.

Kevin was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia on July 18 and is undergoing treatment.

The couple has three school-aged children.

“Jodi and Kevin have been a big part of the Iola-Scandinavia school community for as long as we’ve attended,” said Lisa Shirek, who is organizing the event. “Their girls and my daughter Isis are in the same grade, and Kevin coached basketball for them last year. They are great people.”

When Shirk found out that their son Erich did not go out for cross county this year, she knew she had to do something.

“With such a young family, and their son not going out for cross county to help the family financially killed me,” she said. “It was the very least we could do for them.”

Events will take place throughout the community.

A meat raffle will be held at Little Norway.

There will be a quilt raffle and silent auction at Scandihus and a 50/50 raffle at Country Chic Boutique .

Sliced will giving 20% of their sales that day to the family.

Pumpkin carving will begin at 5 p.m.

It will be followed by a pet costume contest at 6:30 p.m. and pumpkin candy drop at 8 p.m.

A mural will be painted on the garage behind Sliced.

Artists may pay $1 to paint a heart on the garage.

There will be hot chocolate, cider and specialty drinks at Scandihus, pizza at Sliced and hot totties at Little Norway.

People may visit www.caringbridge.org to follow Kevin’s progress.
