Meeting to discuss empty church

Group seeks to use building for arts center

A community meeting is slated for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, to discuss the idea of turning a former church into a community arts center.

The meeting will take place in the Waupaca Area Public Library’s lower-level meeting rooms.

The purpose is to bring the community together to discuss the future possibilities for the former St. Mary Magadalene Catholic Church.

The building is located at the corner of Division and Badger streets and has been vacant for 16 years.

Marci Reynolds has been working on plans for an after-school arts program and makers’ space there.

She is the president of the Waupaca Community Arts Board.

Reynolds will moderate the Nov. 13 meeting, and present the plan to the common council this month.

“It’s important that members of our community have an opportunity to be involved in this process, especially those with a desire to lead this work with passion as well as resources,” she says.

Renovating the current structure for use will be costly.

Moving forward hinges on the involvement of dedicated people.

More information will be shared at the meeting.
