Council approves smoking ban

Vaping also prohibited in Waupaca parks

By Angie Landsverk

Smoking and the use of e-cigarettes is banned in city of Waupaca parks.

The ban also includes the River Ridge Trail system, city square and Waupaca Recreation Center’s green space and parking lots.

The city square is the area around City Hall, including the green space, parking lot on its east side and sidewalks around it.

The common council unanimously approved the ordinance when it met on Nov. 5.

All council members were present.

The ordinance goes into effect with its publication on Thursday, Nov. 14.

However, with the ground already freezing this fall, Parks and Recreation Director Andrew Whitman said education about the new ordinance and posting of signage is planned for next spring.

Ald. Paul Hagen asked if the ordinance also prohibits people from smoking or vaping in vehicles parked in the parks.

City Attorney Tom Hart said it does.

Police Chief Brian Hoelzel said the fine for smoking in prohibited places is $263.50.
