Share-A-Tea pours its last cup

Program raised funds for Iola-Scandy students

After 10 years of raising money for Iola-Scandinavia students in need, Share-A-Tea is coming to an end.

“It’s hard to see it end,” said committee member Ila Sanders. “Over the past several years, this organization has donated over $30,000 to the school district.”

Sanders thanked those who attended for their support.

“By your participation and generosity, you have helped make the lives of kids a little better,” she said. “It is thrilling to feel like you are making a difference for others and at the same time bringing people together for community.”

More than 130 people attended this year’s event.

They enjoyed a menu that included Hibiscus Breeze, Darjeeling and Bangkok teas, assorted sandwiches, scones and dessert.

Melissa Gullen, of Bevent, went to Share-A-Tea for three years.

“It feels like a family atmosphere. Its beautiful, it’s elegant and it’s festive,” she said. “I love the food.”

Her favorites were the cucumber sandwiches and Hibiscus Breeze Tea.

“I like the cucumber sandwich, too,” said her 6-year-old daughter Lily. “The bread is really good. I liked the tea, too and I promised I would try everything.”

Some were disappointed to learn it was ending.

“I have really enjoyed the company and the smiles,” said Diane Caporale. “It’s relaxing. I am going to persuade Ila and her group to keep this going. For now, I am going to enjoy it and take it all in.”

Sarah Wilson agreed.

“This is only my first visit here,” she said. “It has been put together wonderfully. It has been a true labor of love for the children in this community.”
