‘White Christmas’ at library

Film series to screen holiday classic

The Waupaca Area Public Library will show the classic 1954 holiday film “White Christmas” at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, as part of its First Thursday Film Series.

Dr. Jack Rhodes will introduce the movie.

“White Christmas” is, according to Rhodes, a partial remake of the 1942 film “Holiday Inn” and features several popular Irving Berlin songs, including “Sisters,” “Snow,” “Count Your Blessings,” and the title tune.

The stars of the film are Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Danny Kaye, and Vera-Ellen, with direction from Hollywood veteran Michael Curtiz.

The film tells the story of World War II Army buddies who unite with their outfit to pay tribute to their former commanding officer, played by Dean Jagger, as he struggles to operate a vacation retreat in the snows of Vermont. The lighthearted plot revolves around the backstage challenges of pulling together a Christmas show at Jagger’s hotel.

Rhodes notes that “White Christmas” was a huge commercial success upon its release in 1954 and was the top money-making film of the year.

It was also the first Paramount release in the studio’s new VistaVision process and retains a crisp and vivid look due to the Technicolor cinematography by previous Oscar winner Loyal Griggs.

“There is much to like in this perennial favorite,” Rhodes said, in explaining why this particular film should be showcased again some 65 years after its original release.

The program is free and open to the public. Complimentary popcorn, sodas and theater treats will be served. For more information, call the library at 715-258-4414.
