Rohde signs with UW-Parkside

Hortonville senior to play volleyball

After four years of bumps, sets and spikes at Hortonville High School, Maggie Rohde is ready to take her volleyball game to the next level.

The senior signed her National Letter of Intent Nov. 21 to play Division 2 volleyball at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha.

“I’m so excited,” Rohde said. “Not a lot of people get this opportunity to play college volleyball. It means so much to me and I’ve worked so hard for this.

“You get to be on the court with six of your teammates and friends,” she said. “It’s a team sport, so you get close. Smacking the ball over the net and getting a kill or an ace is awesome. I love it.”

She is the latest Hortonville senior to sign with a college. Jake Krause will compete in cross country and track at the University of Minnesota, while Macy McGlone and Morgan Draheim will play basketball at UW-Milwaukee and St. Cloud State, respectively.

Volleyball is a year-round sport for Rohde. Besides suiting up for the Polar Bears, she also competes in club volleyball for the Green Bay-based One Wisconsin Volleyball Club.

“All of my club players from last year are going to college to play volleyball,” she said. ”Knowing that I’m playing with players that are going to college just pushes me to be a better player. I definitely had to be playing club to be noticed. You go to the big tournaments and that’s where all the college coaches are.”

Parkside’s coaching staff first contacted Rohde about a year ago.

“I was reaching out to their coach during my winter club season and she was talking to me about visiting and possibly playing volleyball there,” she said. “I always thought I had the chance to play college volleyball. At first, I didn’t want to know if I wanted to go through with it, but I’m super-excited that I decided to.”

Rohde, who still her senior season of softball ahead of her in Hortonville, plans to major in elementary education.

“Parkside interested me the most because of the family atmosphere,” she said. “The coaches and players all love me already and I love the campus. I’m looking forward to being able to meet a new team, get close to them and play Division 2 volleyball.”
