Jones named Eagle Scout

New London teen earns highest rank

By Casey Jones

Zackary Jones was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.

He is a member of New London Boy Scout Troop 59 whose chartered organization is the American Legion.

The Eagle Scout rank was awarded at the Nov. 21 Bay Lakes Council’s Gathering Waters District monthly board of reviews.

Jones, now age 16, started his scouting journey at age 6 as a member of Cub Scout Pack 3249, which met at Sugar Bush Elementary School.

He joined Boy Scout Troop 59 at age 11.

Throughout that time, his den and troop were led by Tim Olsen, the current Scoutmaster of Troop 59.

Olsen congratulated Jones after he earned his Eagle,

“I am proud of you Zack,” Olsen said. “It’s been a privilege to be your leader. You’ve come a long way since first grade. Best wishes on your life’s journey and thank you for the memories.”

To earn Eagle, Jones had to first earn ranks: Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star and Life.

Along with that, he earned 28 merit badges (21 are required for Eagle rank), served as a leader in his troop and led a service project.

Jones’ service project was to build and install a life jacket loaner station that was completed in 2018.

It is located at the city of New London boat landing and provides life jackets to those boating on the Wolf River or fishing along the shore.

Jones said he had a lot of fun along the way on countless campouts and troop activities.

“I did so many things in scouting that I had not done or probably would have never tried,” Jones said. “Scouting is a big part of my life, it taught me leadership and tons of other things that will help me in life. I am glad I became a scout. It was the best decision of my life.”

Casey Jones is the assistant scoutmaster of Troop 59.
