School Report Card for Manawa

District meets expectations

By Holly Neumann

A presentation about Manawa’s School Report Card was given during last month’s Manawa School Board meeting.

It includes data about multiple indicators for student achievement, growth, closing the gaps and on-track and post-secondary success.

Manawa Elementary School received a 65.4 score for the 2018-19 school year, meeting expectations.

It scored below the state average in each of the four priority areas: student achievement, school growth, closing the gaps and on-track and post-secondary readiness.

Math has been the school’s focus the past couple of years.

That is reflected in the school growth area, where math scores surpassed the state average.

Elementary Principal Michelle Pukita reported 43% of third-grade students taking the Forward Exam scored proficient.

Manawa Jr./Sr. High School received a 68.5 score, meeting expectations as well.

Student achievement was on target with the state average, while school growth was below it.

Closing the gaps and on-track and post-secondary readiness were the strong priority areas for the school, scoring above the state average in both.

“School growth is obviously the area we need to work at,” said Principal Dan Wolfgram. “This is where our focus is going to be next year.”

District wide, the school district received a 66.1 score.

Other districts of similar size also meeting expectations included Iola-Scandinavia with a score of 71.1, Marion with 72.2 and Shiocton with 71.9.

Weyauwega-Fremont received a 73.2 score, exceeding expectations.

Post-Secondary Readiness exceeded the state average for Manawa, while school growth was the biggest area in need of improvement.

“If we can improve on our growth score, it’s going to bleed over into every other priority areas,” said Dannie Brauer, the district’s special education and curriculum director. “District wide, this is the way to go.”

District Administrator Melanie Oppor said the district is striving to be a four-star district, exceeding expectations.

“The district is proud of this year’s scores, but is aware that improving student learning and engagement is an ongoing process. It is work that is never complete as today’s learner needs instruction that is tailored to his/her needs specific needs,” she said. “The School District of Manawa is committed to staying at the forefront of providing a high quality learning program for every student.”
