Manawa wrestlers place second

Klemm, Griffin win championships

Two champions and five runners-up added up to a second-place finish for the Manawa wrestling team Jan. 4 at the Wolves’ annual home invitational.

The Wolves suited up only seven wrestlers for the 14-team invitational and all seven made it to their respective championship matches.

Colten Klemm and Bryan Griffin placed first at 120 and 145 pounds, respectively, while Gavin Linjer (132), Bryce Bartel (152), Colin Moser (170), Corey Beyer (182) and Andrew Elmhorst (220) finished second.

Madison Memorial edged the Wolves by 10 points to win the team championship. The Spartans finished first with 196 points, followed by Manawa (186), Xavier (164), Crivitz (140.5), Stratford (132), Mishicot (118), Crandon (101), Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol and Wausau East (87), Elcho (66), Oconto (56), Tri-County (44.5), Montello (42) and Gillett/Suring (8).

Klemm pinned all five of his opponents to win his championship and three of his pins came in less than one minute.

Griffin pinned two of his three opponents and capped his day by pinning Stratford’s Dillon Kirsch in 2:40 in the finals.

Wrestlers winning individual championships were Griffin Paulsen, Madison Memorial (106); Hutson Kane, Crandon (113); Klemm (120); Logan Verboomen, Xavier (126); Jacob Hilliard, Mishicot (132); Logan Gliniecki, Stratford (138); Griffin (145); Gavin Kirsch, Stratford (152); Kaden Reetz, Madison Memorial (160); Ezekial Lawrence, Crivitz (170); Isaac Diaz, Oconto (182); Jaden Bemis, Crivitz (195); Mac Strand, Xavier (220); and Patrick McDonald, Madison Memorial (285).

The Wolves will resume their Central Wisconsin Conference dual meet schedule Thursday, Jan. 9, as Manawa hosts Wittenberg-Birnamwood. Matches are scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m.
